Finding time within our busy schedules to travel is hard to do. So, when the opportunity arises, we must maximize our time and ensure a memorable trip. As someone usually deemed the “designated planner” of the group, I have become well-versed in the logistics needed to effectively lay out a trip, regardless of the scale. Whether it is a weekend getaway or a trip across the sea, these tips are necessary to ensure your moments are optimized for discovery and enjoyment!

Social media is your best friend

When it comes time to research activities and locations for your trip, I find social media to be the most useful tool. Oftentimes, you can find detailed accounts of real travelers' experiences. These creators often give their authentic opinions since they are usually not producing the content in a partnership. I find that these accounts provide more details than the average written reviews.

I also believe social media to be the best place to research things to do on vacation. Especially on platforms like TikTok, video content can showcase products or services at a travel destination, which gives you a better idea of the overall vibe. Sites like TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Pinterest, as well as Facebook travel groups, are especially useful for checking reviews along the way.

Map it out

Once you have completed your research and have a good idea of what places you want to visit, it can be helpful to create a map of options to utilize once in the location. The more options added to it, the better.

Google Maps allows you to create maps with layers to customize your experience and make scouting out locations incredibly easy. Search “My Maps Google” and, through your respective account, press “Create a New Map.” This will allow you to make a different itinerary for each location you visit. Once you establish a new location, create a layer for each activity (food, hikes, lookouts, tours, bars, museums, etc.). Creating a layer for your must-sees is also recommended. Once you have done this, add the locations you have found through your research to the map in the corresponding layer. Play around with the map settings, as it allows for changes in the aesthetics for easier use.

Once I have created my maps, I like to prioritize some of the must-see locations, then use the map to find my next stops based on what I am close to. For example, if I am hungry, I can pull up my map and see what restaurants I have already looked into that are nearby. This is useful because it avoids researching on the spot. Scouting out locations ahead of time makes me feel more organized and helps me avoid falling into tourist traps or overly expensive pricing.

Talk to those who know the location best

While having planned locations can be helpful, do not be afraid to be spontaneous. Explore interesting locations as you come across them!

Talk to those who already know the location well. I have found the best places through taking the time to talk to locals and hear firsthand about what they enjoy doing in the area. I have gotten the most valuable advice from waiters and cashiers at local shops. They are typically eager to help you make the most out of your experience in the area.

Other tips for a budget-friendly vacation

You don’t need to break the bank to get the most out of your vacation. Book travel accommodations ahead of time to avoid higher rates. When possible, drive instead of flying, but check the route ahead of time for any potentially hazardous roads or conditions — I learned that one the hard way! Additionally, public transportation is not something to shy away from, as it is much cheaper than Uber-ing around. If you find yourself in a walkable city, get around by foot when you can. This will also allow you to see more of the city.

Other things to look into to lower prices are student discounts and loyalty programs. If you are traveling internationally, consider using cash instead of a card when possible to avoid currency exchange fees. Packing light can make any walking trip easier and help you avoid weight fees on flights.

With these tips in mind, bon voyage, and good luck on your journey!
